They have a far better record at the UEFA European Championships qualifying for eight tournaments, including in 2004 as hosts, and have won one title in 2016 as well as finishing runners-up in 2004.

History

The Federação Portuguesa de Futebol (FPF) was formed in 1014 as the Union Portuguesa de Futebol (UPF) and became members of FIFA in 1923.

Portugal played its first international football match against Spain in Madrid in December 1921.

Wales record v Portugal

The first meeting between Wales and Portugal came in 1949 when the Football Association of Wales arranged a European tour, taking in games against Portugal, Belgium and Switzerland.

Except for two matches against France in 1933 and 1939, this was the first time Wales faced opposition from outside the British Isles.

The game in 1949 was notable for being the first time Wales faced opponents who also wore red and therefore played in a change strip of "daffodil yellow" for the first time.
