Wales v Albania

Albanian Football Association

Albania qualified for their first major tournament by reaching 2016 UEFA European Championships finishing as runners-up to Portugal ahead of both Denmark and Serbia.

The first international match played by Albania was against Yugoslavia in 1946, which ended in a 3–2 home defeat at Qemal Stafa Stadium, Tirana.

History

The Federata Shqiptare e Futbollit was formed in 1930 but despite joining FIFA in 1932 and being founder members of UEFA in 1954, Albania did not participate in international competition until the Euro 1964 qualification campaign.

Having failed to qualify for the World Cup in West Germany in 1974, Albania withdrew from international competition refusing to participate in the qualifiers for the 1976 UEFA European Championships, the 1978 FIFA World Cup and the 1980 UEFA European Championships.

Wales record v Albania

The first meeting between Albania and Wales came during the 1996 UEFA European Championship qualifying campaign.

Chris Gunter won his 93rd cap against Albania in Elbasan in 2018 breaking Neville Southal's record and becoming Wales' most capped international. Andy King won his 50th cap for Wales during the same match.
