Following the events of Bloody Sunday in January 1972, the 1971-72 British Home Championship was a victim of The Troubles in Northern Ireland with threats made by Republican activists against the Scotland team who were due to visit Windsor Park, Belfast.

As a result, the Northern Ireland v Scotland match was switched to Hampden Park, Glasgow, effectively giving Scotland an extra home match.

The points system worked as follows: 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw

As Goal Difference was not used to determine position, England and Scotland shared the trophy
