Wales v Iceland

iceland

Iceland qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals as well as the 2016 UEFA European Championships.

History

The Knattspyrnusamband Íslands (KSÍ) was formed on 26 March 1947, joining FIFA the same year and UEFA in 1954.[3.

Iceland's first international match was a 1-0 victory away to the Faroe Islands on 29 July 1930, however this is not classed as an official match as neither country was a member of FIFA.

The country's first official match was a 3-0 home defeat to Denmark on 17 July, 1946.

Wales record v Iceland

Wales' first meeting with Iceland came during the 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with Wales running out 4-0 winners.

The home match against Iceland was a disastrous 2-2 draw - a game which was held up for 43 minutes because of floodlight failure at Swansea City's Vetch Field - meaning Wales' hopes of qualifying for the 1982 FIFA World Cup was out of their own hands.

Craig Bellamy won his 50th cap for Wales in a friendly against Iceland in Reykjavik on 28 May 2008.
