Since gaining independence from the USSR in 1991, Azerbaijan have never qualified for either the FIFA World Cup or the UEFA European Championships, however Azeri footballer, Anatoliy Banishevskiy, was part of the USSR squad during the 1966 FIFA World Cup as well as the 1968 and 1972 UEFA European Championships.


History

The Republic of Azerbaijan was formed in 1991 following the break up of the USSR, with the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan becoming members of UEFA and FIFA in 1994.

Azerbaijan's first official international game was a 6-3 defeat away to Georgia in a friendly match in September 1992 and the country made its competitive during the 1996 UEFA European Championship qualifying campaign.


Wales record v Azerbaijan

Wales' first meeting with Azerbaijan was during the 2004 UEFA European Championship qualifying campaign.

Craig Bellamy's goal against Azerbaijan during the 4-0 win in March 2003 is, at 13 seconds, the fastest goal ever scored by Wales in an international match.
