After the Second World War, Germany found itself split into the Federal Republic of Germany, German Democratic Republic and Saarland, each of which was banned by FIFA until 1950.

East Germany qualified for their won and only FIFA World Cup in West Germany in 1974 where in the only ever meeting between both countries, East Germany defeated their Western counterparts 1-0.


History

After the Second World War, Germany found itself split into the Federal Republic of Germany, German Democratic Republic and Saarland, each of which was banned by FIFA until 1950.

East Germany's first official match following their being allowed membership of FIFA, was a 0-3 defeat by Poland in Warsaw in September 1952.

Following the fall of the Berlin Wall and ahead of the formal reunification of Germany on 3 October 1990, the East German, Deutscher Fußball-Verband, had already been integrated into the West German, Deutscher Fußball-Bund.

Prior to reunification both East Germany had breen drawn in the same qualifying group for the 1992 UEFA European Championships as West Germany. Group 5, which also contained Belgium, Wales and Luxembourg. Games involving East Germany were scratched and fixtures initially scheduled for West Germany were now played as a unified Germany team.

Wales record v East Germany

Wales' first meeting with East Germany was a 1-2 defeat in a FIFA 1958 World Cup Qualifying match in Leipzig.

East Germany were drawn in the same qualifying group for the 1992 European Championship as Wales, Belgium, Luxembourg and West Germany, but on 3 October, 1990 both German states were reunited and with them their football associations. The East German fixtures were, therefore, removed from the fixture list.
